Traditions has a new product line by SignifyPink called "Fight Like a Girl" and "Ribbons & Gloves".

Signify Promotions developed the line after being approached by a Mammography Technician and her co-workers, committed to helping a Nurse in their own Mammography Department, with the cost of medical expenses for her breast cancer treatment that her insurance did not cover.

Once they covered her expenses, they realized they had to keep going with the product line to "share the wealth" with others!

Every product sold helps to raise funds, spread awareness and support for the causes women are most passionate about.

Today was my annual Mammogram appointment. Maria has hers tomorrow. Our exams could not have been scheduled at a more perfect time!

This past weekend while enjoying Tradition's annual Open House we began to wonder what actually makes something a tradition? It seems to us everyone has their own thoughts on what makes an event or practice into a tradition. Here at the store it definitely involves friends, family, time spent together and decorating! Lots and lots of decorating!

This week the Traditions family did what they have done annually for over 20 years. Decorated the store with this year's Christmas trends.

And no one has done it here longer than Mrs. Frasha Evanoff! Along with this years owls and birds that will be gracing all of our Christmas trees this season, you will be once again be able to add to your holiday decor with her one of a kind handcrafted items.

Mrs. Evanoff continues to create and design her hats, scarves, pillows, purses, placemats, napkins, tablecloths and all those amazing Open House treats for your enjoyment! Oh and she shares her recipes too! They are of course available at the store. All Mrs. Evanoff's creations have been made from her heart annually for you- her extended Tradition's family- for over 20 years. Now that is a Tradition's Tradition!

And we do not mean readin', ritin' and rithmatic! Try recycling, re-purposing and reusing! Traditions now has pieces from Furniture Classics' Modern Classics Collection. Each piece was designed by an artist from Belgium, that Maria has actually met when "shopping at market", using recycled steel drum sheets. They are then re-finished with either an acid wash or a rustic paint.

Each piece is uniquely crafted and very beautiful. We have several available in the store including a mirror, end tables, bistro chairs, credenzas and even a coffee table that can be converted into a dining table. Of course you can order from the whole collection if we do not have exactly what you are looking for in the store.

Stonewall Kitchen New at Traditions!

Many of you probably already know of and have purchased Stonewall Kitchen's food products before. But it would have been out of town! Now you do not have to leave Erie to do so!

We at Traditions love this company's story! Just over 20 years ago, partners Jonathon King and Jim Stott started making and selling homemade jams in New England's local farmer's markets. Stonewall Kitchen's name was actually inspired by the typical New England stone walls right outside their kitchen window. The rest they say is history!

Eye of Time Lux is a reproduction of a pocket watch turned into a desk watch. And then their is the propeller clock.

This is a reproduction of a WWI Propeller with a clock. The typical WWI flying ace was accustomed to wrecking a plane now and then. For good luck the propeller was turned into a clock and taken home. We also have the Art Deco Flight Clock.

The On Top of the World Globe is so retro. There are 30 minute hourglasses and how about a miniature roulette game for the gambler.

The Stateroom Bar, Stateroom Armoire and Trunk Table are coming in the fall for the guy that has everything.

I think that this quote can be looked at in two ways....

Some of you out there already know that I sold my store to a long time "shop girl" at Traditions..Maria Minnaugh. It was truly a very hard decision to make..one that I pondered over for a very long time. But it was time for me to step back and make more time for my family, friends, and for passions that were lost along the way. I will never forget how all of you made me feel.....you opened your lives to me and your homes...I will miss that!

And I hope that I too have touched your lives in a positive way! I still will be "around" the store working with clients, so we still will probably see each other from time to time.

And, as for Traditions.....it is going as strong as ever! Fueled by the passion of a new owner, but yet still the "same". Maria, Kelli, Harriet, and Petra are still there to help you . Traditions is still the same place for you to go to when you need a little "lift" or to wander around and just "feel better". Maria has so many great ideas and, as for the store, you have got to stop by and see all of the new merchandise!

And as for this blog, Maria will continue to update you on all of the exciting new "stuff" arriving daily and all of the "happenings" at the store. I will also be starting a new blog.....which I will let you know about later. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of your support during the 20 years that I have been at Traditions and most of all, how all of you made me feel...I will miss each and every one of you! Is It Pink or Red?

Although the March issue of House Beautiful magazine is dedicated to using pink in decorating your home...I was quite taken by the rooms of decorator Ellen O'Neil, who uses shades of pink and red in her home....but it doesn't scream...I am a pink room!

And, of course, since she used stacks of books in her room, I love it all the more!

She used the wrong side of faded red awning fabric to cover the sofas....a traditional oriental rug...red toile covered chairs (I told you toile never goes out of style!)...and a mix of rattan, dark wood, and painted wood.....and all of this is set against white walls.

I also love the old white painted kitchen cupboards and the checkerboard floor in the kitchen.

And look at all of the yummy elements in this bedroom! Aged white painted wicker, checks, plaids, stripes, painted wood floors, an old painted bookshelf, and simple roman shades at the windows. I could really be content in this house...until I find another one tomorrow that I love also...maybe that is why I have such a hard time making decisions for my own home...I love so many different looks.....

Decorating a Wall Around the Giant Flat Screen TV..

I love this wall...The round clock faces add a softness to the hard square edges of the TV sreen. The image is from the Pottery Barn catalog.

Geneieve Gorder (HGTV host) does a fabulous job decorating this wall. Are you seeing a trend of keeping the colors very neutral...black and white?

I guess the idea is to try to have the TV disappear into the rest of the artwork on the wall.

Hi everyone...just wanted to drop you a line and a couple of pictures of what came in this week so far...

Aluminum and leather clad side table with French stenciling...

Really fun and surprisingly comfortable aluminum chairs...

Stenciled trunk with drawers.....and lots more to come. We received a delivery of upholstered chairs and a sofa...dining table, chairs, chests of drawers....came in yesterday. We spent all day moving the store around so I didn't have time for pictures. I'll post them later...

I haven't posted anything lately about my grandchildren...all three were trophy winners in wresting last weekend! Yeah Kyle, Zack, and Jeremy! Talk to you soon, take care, Sue

It's Time to go to Traditions...

We found an amazing clock company when we were in Atlanta! Isn't this collection of alarm clocks too cute? The round ones even have the old-fashioned bell ringer.

From funky retro to antique chic.....

The details of each clock is just amazing. I don't know which one to pick...how about a wall of clocks...that would be fun!

These unique gestures' pieces also just arrived. They come with a hang tag that explains the origins of the gestures.

The coins and the nuts and bolts on these frames look so real!

So You Want to Paint Your Walls...White?

It's that time of year when we want to spruce up the house...why not paint? I have been looking through my photo file and found that I have many pictures of rooms that are painted white, or "near" white. (photo from Marie Olsson Nylander)

These rooms are not boring....other color has been used in the room to make it interesting.

It is amazing how the pops of yellow really make this foyer bright and sunny.

From Canadian House and Home...great use of pattern on the floor and bedding makes this room colorful even though the walls are white.

This room by Caldwell Blake is very calming. The wood, stone, natural balls, and the simple pattern on the windows tells the story...more texture and shape than color.

Again, great use of color on the bedding...don't you love the mix of color and patterns used on this bed?

From Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles...again natural elements and texture add warmth and interest to this basically all white kitchen.

This room is bright and airy, but not boring. Look at all of the great design elements working together here. There is wicker, soft drapes, textured rugs, yummy graphic toss pillows, dark wood, light wood, and a great selection of upholstered pieces that work really well together.

I have shown you this picture before of a laundry room that I love. It is so clean and bright. I really like the combination of a little vintage looking floral teamed up with the crisp black and white rug....and the map on the wall...perfect!

Again, this all white entrance way was kicked up a notch with that great green door and the colorful runner. The runner looks like it is a Dash and Albert rug.....we carry the line in the store.

I am not sure that I could be so brave as to put orange and white draperies in my living room...but try to imagine this room without these drapes...pretty boring, huh?

Again, great pops of color in this bedroom...

How about this kitchen...fun ...

I thought this room had a funky playfulness to it....very creative paint treatment...

This glorious room was designed by Caldwell Flake....again...wood, metal, glass, flowers, books...notice the backs of the bookcases are painted black. The use of black throughout the room grounds it and helps unit all of the elements.

Take away the accessories...and you would have an all white room....see the possibilities? Room designed by Sarah Tuttle.

Another example of a white room but with great color added. In this room the slip covered sofa can change....

I love this white porch. I really love all of the elements that the Novogratzes have added to the room to make it so personal. I guess, when you really think about it, when you personalized your space to be really you....you have great design that you are comfortable living with.

Well, I have shown you some of the "white" rooms in my folder...I have more to come. Mind you, I also have wonderful favorites that are rooms painted with lots of color....even black. I will get these together for you ....The bottom line is.....color is so personal...dig through all of those photos that you have pulled from your magazines. Decide what elements that you like about each room....pay attention to the color. What color rooms do you pick? Is this color a "a passing fancy" ? If so, just use that color on simple accessories...pillows, throw rugs, a door...a lampshade...otherwise...go for it! Hope to see you soon. Take care, Sue

Home From Market......

You can only imagine how much I enjoyed this showroom! Books everywhere! They even screwed books to the walls....

The piled suitcases...books piled on the chair....books floating off of the top of the case and onto the walls....and book pages pasted to the walls...loving it!

We already have the rope mirror and the antlers in the store....the plates are on order...

We also ordered the multi colored globes and the picture frames on tall stands...

In the same showroom, they arranged cut wood in the "faux" fireplace and painted the room a yummy green...so Ralph Lauren .

We stopped by Dash and Albert to see their new rugs. Wide bold stripes was the new look for them.

Pine Cone Hill did a fabulous new bedspread that covered this fantastic bed in soft layers of linen.

We ordered this beautiful trumeau mirror from another new vendor...

A bit of whimsy....this last call bell...perfect for your bar area...

In still another showroom, Maria and I fell in love with this worn leather chair that has pockets on the sides to hold your books and magazines.

We also ordered this crazy beautiful cutting board piece....the back of it is marble! Doesn't it look old?

Atlanta Market Day 5!!

When you shop the Market it is like you are in a time warp! You don't know what day it is ...you can't even remember what you had for breakfast...or if you even had breakfast! I thought that I would share with you some of our favorite showrooms...just a glimpse. Keep in mind that there are hundreds....no, thousands of vendors here. And not all of the showrooms are wonderful and organized like this one.

We ordered this amazing table...yes, table! You literally turn the crank on the side of this unit to have it be a flat bookcase, a tilting bookcase, or keep on cranking and it becomes a 36"x60" dining room table! too cool!

This dinging table also has a crank that opens the table to insert one of three leaves...it will expand to 121"..

I know that it is hard to believe that we had to order Christmas when we are still trying to get the glitter out of our carpets!....but we did...

There was lots of glittery and shiny shown this year.....almost too much. And so much "cutesy" stuff. It is so time consuming to weed all of the junk from the wonderful!

We ordered the new Sid Dickens and they should be in the store in about six weeks.

This beautiful mirror sits on the floor and also is a folding screen.

We also ordered this shuttered mirror.....love it!

Birdhouses large and small seemed to be shown everywhere...but this one was the best!

Cows also seemed to be showing up a lot, along with birds and bunnies.

Dress forms in all sizes were also a big decorating item. These small dress forms are used to organize jewelry. The small chairs are too adorable! They are also used for jewelry.....

What is old is new again...architectural elements are so huge again! We ordered this beautiful small coffee table...a one-of-a-kind!

We also ordered some of the fabulous lamps...

In Love With Upholstered Headboards...

Fabric headboards let you define your design sense and your color savvy...

They may be calming and soothing...

This bedroom by Jay Jeffers has so many wonderful design elements! I adore the headboard! Amazing stools....refreshing color combos that work well together but don't "match"! I am not sure what to think about the painted arch behind the bed...but it is certainly interesting!

Another bedroom by Jay Jeffers...I think that he likes this style of upholstered headboard too.

I know that I have posted this image from House Beautiful before, but I love the shape of the headboard and the fact that they weren't afraid to put it in front of a window! So many of us still believe in the old rule of not putting the headboard in front of a window...even if it opens up the room to so many other options for a good layout.

This just cracked me up so I had to include it here....!

A lovely image by the mother/daughter design team of Caldwell Flake. An upholstered headboard doesn't take that much fabric to make and it gives the room such wonderful warmth and personality.

To Kindle or not to Kindle?!?

I love books....as many of you well know...I guess that for some of you, all of these books would seem like way too much clutter. I really feel that this display is very , well, artistic! (from Bohemian interiors blog)You see, I received a Kindle from my husband for Christmas. I thought he knew how I felt about books!! It is still in the box....I don't think that I can connect to it like I can a book that you carry around with you, loose your place in...get pizza stains on the pages...you know, something that becomes a part of you...

Aside from the "reading" part of books, I am slightly obsessed (that is what my daughters think!) with anything having to do with the printed word! After you have read your books, lent them out to friends..decided that is wasn't worth reading...or whatever, you can have so much fun re purposing it...in so many ways!

And as a decorator...there is no better way to personalize a home than with books....

Don't you just love it?

Books make a new house seem, well, lived in. They make a house seem like it has a history..

Don't try going down these stairs in the dark! Did the owners really read all of these books? I really doubt it.....but what a statement they make!

Take away these stacks of books and what is left in this room...no personality..lots of white!

Here are two more reasons that I don't really think that I can keep my Kindle. My grandson's Weston and Jeremy. Don't you think that they have enough gadgets and visual stimulation via the Internet, the Wii, educational videos, video games that take up hours of their free time? I always thought that games were to be played with one another....how antisocial so much of our entertainment has become! Ooops...I'll get off of the soap box now.. I want these little guys to love to hold, smell, feel, and read a real book!

Anyway, I don't want to hurt my husband's feelings...but I think the Kindle will have to go back. You are probably thinking....but it is so small...can go anywhere...saves the trees...nope..can't do it...not quite yet.

So, for now, I am still hoarding all of those paperback books that no one wants anymore...you can't drop them at Salvation Army...very few people want them.....

My wish, is that books will still be loved by the younger generation....the books that you can hold, smell, and nod of with at night....Take care, Sue

Perfect Christmas Appetizer.....

I found this quick and easy recipe from Pillsbury last Christmas. You can make these little appetizers ahead and freeze them...just pop them in the oven to reheat them when your guests arrive! Before we get started...I just wanted to let you know that you can ball up the "scraps" of pie dough and roll it back out to make another 12 appetizers..so add an extra egg , and another 1/4 cup of milk to stretch the recipe to make 36 appetizers instead of 24!!

Mini Swiss Quiches
Nutmeg subtly rounds out the flavor in these tiny green onion and cheese quiches.
Prep time: 25 minutes
Makes: 24 quiches (36 if you stretch it!)

Ingredients:
1 box (15oz) Pillsbury refrigerated pie crusts, softened as directed on box
1 1/2 cups shredded Swiss cheese (6 oz)
2 tablespoons sliced green onions (2 medium)
2 eggs
1/2 cup milk
1/4 teaspoon salt
Dash ground nutmeg

Directions:
1. Heat oven to 375 F. Spray 24 (36) mini muffin cups with cooking spray.
2. Remove pie crusts from pouches; place flat on cutting board or pastry cloth. With 2 1/2"
round cutter ( I used the rim of a juice glass), cut 12 rounds from each crust. (Then
ball scraps up and roll out to cut another 12.) Press 1 pie crust round into bottom and up
sides of each muffin cup.
3. Place 1 tablespoon cheese in each cup. Top each with a few onion slices and pimiento
pieces. In 2 cup measuring cup, beat eggs, milk, salt, and nutmeg with fork until well
blended. Pour mixture into crusts, filling to within 1/4 inch of top.
4. Bake 25 minutes or until golden brown. Cool 2 minutes. With tip of knife, lift quiches
from cups. Serve warm.

You may freeze the quiches in a baking pan. Cover the pan tightly. Reheat at 350 for 10 minutes.

Very easy and so yummy! That's it for today! So much to do and so little time!

Some Favorites at the Shop.......

I am sure you have noticed that lanterns are a huge decorating accessory right now. The beauty of the lantern is that it can be used year round! Add one of our amazing battery operated candles...a few sprigs of evergreens...an old page from a book, or a Christmas card...and you have instant Christmas!

We have lanterns in all shapes, sizes, and colors.

You can even hang the lanterns on the wall...for an interesting display cabinet.

Or...fill it with all natural elements...

Real candles may be used in the lanterns that have a metal roof and air vents. Wouldn't this look lovely on your front porch to welcome your guests?

Another favorite is the Bayberry candle. We have them in tapers, votives and two sizes of pillars.

These decorated chocolate bars would be a fun stocking stuffer, hostess gift, or a small gift for a friend.....

"Old looking" mercury glass jugs wrapped in wire mesh are so interesting...

And if you like the jugs...you will love the lamps ...they come in three sizes!

We also have lots of mercury glass candlesticks in varying sizes. They will add a sparkle to your holiday table... and can be used throughout the year...

How about a unique clock made from vintage cameras...for that photography buff...

Outdoor Decorating...Naturally

Check out her post to get tips on outdoor containers for the winter...

An amazing mix of natural materials is used. If you have any artificial outdoor decorations that you are currently using.....why not just add some natural branches and boughs to the arrangement to fill it out.....

One year we dipped fresh apples in clear floor wax to preserve them. We drove a small wooden dowel into the apples and added them to the outdoor arrangement.

Simple, yet elegant. We have the large pine cones at the shop if you can't find any....

I guess I had better stop dreaming about the possibilities and get to work decorating my home.

Christmas Open House 2010.....

I thought I would post some pictures before we opened our doors on Friday for the Christmas Open house.....

I want to thank first of all, my amazing family....my Mom Frasha, my aunt Rita and Shenia...they still are a driving force behind my Open Houses....all the baking and washing coffee cups and wine glasses.....and vacuuming and cleaning...chatting with customers...exchanging recipes and knitting patterns....they help to make the shop what it is...always welcoming....

My daughters Kelli and Stacey are such a huge help to me....always there....whether I am cheerful or cranky, they still hang in there with me. I love all of you guys so much!!

I couldn't have "pulled off" another open house without my "extended family"...Maria, Harriet, and Petra. Thanks for hours of work and a never ending ability to help me solve problems...I love you guys like family....and a special thank you to Les Fobes for helping out too!

Now, with that being said... Thank you to all of my customers that attended the open house. So many of you have been with me from the first open house about twenty years ago!! And it is always wonderful to meet new customers that are here for the first time!

We recently received some wonderful "French inspired" pieces at the store. Besides the chest...we have two different sized upholstered storage ottomans...

This piece is just adorable...

This printed canvas purse is so unique!

We also received quite a few printed canvas and burlap pillows that would look good with any decor...

We have so much new....I thought I would just give you a small peek....The store is in sort of a disarray right now.....I can't believe that we will be getting geared up for our Christmas Open House next week! It is our 20th Christmas Open House!!!

Idea File II.....

I have wanted to cover books in old paper and maps for a long time. To make them look even more realistic, place small pieces of twine or yarn horizontally over the spine before covering the book. Image from www.remodelista.com.

Another image from Phoebe Howard. I think the look of a small bar tucked into a shelving unit is great! What makes it really special is the mirror wall and the artwork hung on top of the mirror.

I snapped this photo at the Atlanta Gift Market...Even before I saw this chair, my Mom and I had been shopping the Salvation Army and The Goodwill stores for old woolen suits and skirts. We then washed them in the washer in warm water and cut them up for pillows, table runners, and ottoman covers....I haven't had the time to complete a large project like a chair......Wonderful "Ralph Lauren" look don't you think?

I love the bold look of these horizontal stripes......Maria painted horizontal stripes in one of the rooms of the shop last year....make it a point to check it out!

Reclaim an old chest of drawers.....make it funky and personal....why not get your kids involved?

I love this built in bookcase that surrounds the sofa! The swing arm lamp is a great idea too....you could actually mount the light onto the side of the book shelf and hide the wiring if you weren't able to have an electrician mount it into the wall..

I probably have shown you this pic before...what a great accent wall..or for a powder room...or a mudroom....

Kind of the same idea here....except there is a definite pattern....you could use wallpaper scraps or fabric!

I would have never chosen these two fabrics to use together! but they look great! Now to find some giant polka dot fabric!!

A fellow shop owner and friend...Debbie Dunsberry...collected these salt shakers all year long. She wired them for ornaments and hand made the little tags...You are the salt of the earth...You should check out her blog at www.curioussofa.com . And check out her online store too!

I have so many ideas and projects that I would love to do....can't seem to find the time, so I thought I would share them with you.....

Heather Bullard snapped this photo of an old drop leaf table turned into a work of art. You all know how much I love using old books for projects....a couple of coats of matte polyurethane and this table is a one of a kind ...

What a fun project! This time the comics were used to add a little bit of color...

Another idea from Heather Bullard, old patterns can be found at garage sales all around town....this idea can be incorporated using newspaper also...perfect for Christmas too!

Heather Bullard once again inspires to use old tissue and sheet music to make a flower garland. This garland would look great on your tree! especially for music lovers!

Make your glass topped table truly special by placing cherished mementos under the glass...

I have always wanted to upholster a chair like this...great fun and so custom!

Eddie Ross took a bare bones closet and ....

turned it into a bar!

A "stock" mirror was given some trim to make it look like a window...opens up the room and provides a full view for that last look in the morning!

A Wonderful Party.....

We are all decked out for fall at Traditions...don't you just love the little baskets on a cane that you can stick into the ground at your front door? Fill the basket with fall leaves and pumpkins...so cute!

We had lots of pumpkins for our Fall Customer Appreciation Party on Saturday...

Rebecca Stocynski grew all of these wonderful heirloom pumpkins and brought them to the shop for us to sell to benefit the reading program at Emerson-Gridley School. Traditions then matched the amount from the sale of the pumpkins and the school will be receiving over $800 to buy new books!! Thank you to all of our valued customers that participated and bought the pumpkins!

These little pumpkins add a pop of color to this table setting...

I made some little "give-aways" for our customers....little half pint jars filled with candy corn...

I traced the around the lid of the jar onto colorful scrap booking paper and then stenciled on a spider, pumpkin, or a cat. I also made little tags out of the paper and cut them out with pinking shears...filled the jars with candy corn and tied them up with ribbon, raffia, and twine.

Rebecca also catered the party! She hollowed out one of the little pumpkins and filled it with a yummy dip....

She also served stuffed cherry tomatoes and adorable tea sandwiches.....

I also had other helpers...my adorable granddaughter Isabella and Evan...they whisked away the coffee cups and wine glasses at lightning speed!

My good friend, Deb , from Jamestown brought her truck (to load up her goodies) and a bunch of her friends...

We all had a great time. I am so blessed to have such wonderful family, friends, and customers!

What Is "Growing On" at Traditions........

You are right! This is a pumpkin patch! Two years ago a group of women took a bus trip sponsored by Traditions, to the Country Living Fair in Columbus, Ohio. Many of us were simply taken by the "heirloom" pumpkins that they had there for sale. So...Rebecca Stocynski took it upon herself to do some research on the pumpkins and ended up buying the seeds and convincing her husband to rota til a large section of her backyard so she could plant....lots of pumpkins!

She said her backyard looked like "Jurassic Park". Neighbors walked by everyday to watch their progress... This one is such a beautiful shade of soft green....I don't remember the name...Rebecca will tell you..

I think this one is the Cinderella pumpkin.

Well you get the idea....anyways...on Saturday September 25th these pumpkins will be for sale at the store ...and the proceeds will be donated by Rebecca to the Emerson-Gridley School reading program!!! and Traditions will match the donation!! A Beautiful Place to Rest.......

We often overlook one of the most important rooms of the house.....where we spend the most time....and where we should feel comforted and refreshed....the bedroom. This photo from Country Homes magazine (2007) is still a favorite of mine. It has good lighting, comfy bedding, a place for all of your favorite "stuff" and such a relaxing color palette. It doesn't come off as too "sweet" because elements like the hanging lantern and the dark wicker basket seem to "ground" the room so it isn't too soft.

How fun is this? Don't you have a little chest of drawers just waiting to be painted a fun color?

Even though this room is basically tone on tone...the different textures and the use of wood give it an extreme calm, but not boring look. From Phoebe Howard interiors.

I have probably shared this image from Kathryn Ireland with you before. I just love the mix of patterns...stripes, I see three different ones, large prints, small prints, prints on the lampshades...this is just a cozy room.

This is the only way I like to see an American flag displayed...it gets me every time! Love it..from House Beautiful magazine.

Also from House Beautiful...the combination of the blue and green is so refreshing. I like the look when the bed skirt matches the upholstered headboard.

It takes only a few pops of color to change out this room.

This window was used as a "headboard". Sometimes the only place there is room for a bed, especially in older homes, is in front of the window. Good for summer breezes....not so sure about the winter blasts!

I really like masculine bedrooms....At first I thought that the lamps were too big for the space....that is an "old school" thought. After looking at it for a while ...it seemed ok. But the reason it was okay...there is so much other stuff on the walls to look at...you don't look just at the lamps...you see it as a whole. Sometimes when decorating, we get to the part where we have painted the room, new flooring is installed, and we have two pieces of furniture in the room. Hmmm...we don't think that we like it! Always go on to the next layer...your artwork, pillows, baskets, etc....give your room a chance before you despair!

Erin and Dave's weddding.....

My niece Erin married Dave over the 4th of July weekend this summer...

She loves the bright colors of zinnias and wildflowers...so she asked me to do some simple decorations for her wedding. My two adorable granddaughters, Isabella and McKenna, were her flower girls.

Her bridesmaids wore beautiful brown dresses and the flower girls carried bouquets of daisies....

On the large tables we placed wreaths of zinnias which encircled hurricane vases filled with rice and a candle...

On all of the smaller tables...all 29 of them!...we placed wildflower bouquets that were plucked from her Dads', (my brother Fred) gardens and surrounding fields. I placed the flowers in a quart canning jar, then placed the jar inside of a white craft bag. I then tied a brown ribbon around the mouth of the jar with a handmade tag that had a picture of Dave and Erin on it with the saying.."Thanks a bunch for sharing this special day with us". I placed three 1/2 cup canning jars with votive candles in them around the centerpiece.

After the wedding we gave the centerpieces away to happy guests!

Erin made sure all of her cousins had some entertainment at their tables...She bought big yellow plastic sand buckets and glued orange and pink polka dots on them and filled them with toy trucks, play doh, crayons and markers.....Her idea was for everyone at the wedding to feel like they were at a big picnic....very informal and lots of fun!! And we did have fun! Thanks, Erin, for the opportunity to help you and Dave make your special day a time we will all fondly remember....

A Peek Into My Photo File......

I was browsing through my photo file and thought I would share some of my favorite images with you. Some of them are just beautiful to look at...and some of them would be fun projects.

This "storage shed" would fit perfectly in my back yard.....

I thought this was a great idea for summer entertaining...an old piece of barn wood set down the center of the table. Add some votives and fresh wild flowers...so pretty, and still elegant with the all white tablecloth and dish settings.

And for the little guys...add some jars filled with crayons and the kids will stay busy while the grown ups dine!

Great alternative to that unsightly cooler!

Maybe a little less pattern would be better...but I like the vibes that this setting gives off!! By the way, we actually have the quilt with the black background at the store!

From Heather Bullard...an old table covered with newsprint.....you know how I love that!

Or, how about a chair covered with the comic pages of the newspaper?

There are many things that I like here....The rustic wood and metal bench stacked with books...the candelabra perched unexpectedly....and the artwork hung with chains...love it all!!

This is a great way to show off mementos, pictures, and pressed flora...This idea can be used on just about anything.....coffee table, side table , chest of drawers, console, or even your kitchen table...Hope you enjoyed a peek into my file.....

Marrket Finds Coming In....

You just have to see for yourself.....wonderful "French inspired" tableware...Butter dishes, cheese board, salt and pepper, canister sets, bowls, pitchers......all at amazing prices. I got a phenomenal price on these items at the Atlanta Market and I am passing the savings on to you! buy early for gifts...they are packaged in adorable gift boxes.

Our Sid Dickens wall is just about full...and it doesn't include the Fall collection that I ordered at Market. We have just about everyone in the collection at the store right now.

We are still receiving great industrial pieces...more to come!

Just arrived...beautiful hand blocked table cloths and tea towels.

Such a great idea...these self stick frames do not harm your walls and can be removed and placed elsewhere...we have many different varieties of these self stick frames. Great for the kids going back to college or apartment dwellers that can't pound nails into the walls.

We just hung these fantastic mercury glass pendants. Use just one or all of them over a dining table!

You have got to see these amazing lamp shades. They are hand crafted by Harriet's mom (she lives in Sweden and visits during the summer). Custom orders are welcomed...they can be shipped flat!!

I just had to include this photo of Harriet and Petra...two of the girls that help you every time you come in...I felt like I was their Mom taking prom pictures! They are with their husbands' Jim and Rudy... they stopped by the shop on their way to a wedding.

Mirror...Mirror...

Mirrors can create big impact in a room.....this oversized gilded mirror adds drama to this bath.

How many of us have the standard large mirror over our bathroom sinks? By placing another mirror on top of this boring space you can create such charm....

The homeowner took using mirrors to enlarge a space one step further.....she had pieces of mirror cut to fit inside the vanity doors.

This floor mirror was placed behind an interesting vignette for visual impact.

The mirror behind this bar space was enhanced further by hanging a piece of artwork on top of the mirror. Design by Phoebe Howard.

A grouping of mirrors on this wall makes a fun arrangement. Check the shop in the coming weeks for lots of "smaller" mirrors that can be used in groupings like this one.

Again, another mirror was placed over a larger mirror for added interest.

It is interesting to place different shaped mirrors on top of one another.....

You can even hang a mirror over bookcase shelving.....

Use a mirror in you wall decorating plans when a piece of art just won't due. Careful planning went into this grouping. Make sure that you hang your mirror in the right spot so as not to interfere with something that you will be displaying beneath it.

This look might not be for everyone....but I think it is so interesting to hang two different mirrors together. They both have a "vintage feel" so they do relate to one another in this way.

Again, a rectangular shape hung over a round mirror....don't you just love how they hung those plates inside of frames...and also note the piece of silverware attached to each paltter...great look for a little investment!!

Atlanta Market.....

The new fall 2010-Silk Road Collection for Sid Dickens didn't disappoint!! It is absolutely beautiful. The new collection, in keeping with the bright, fresh, porcelain quality of the Fall 2010 Silk Road Collection , is in a new Bisque finish. Eleven of his old tiles will be produced in this finish only as of September 6th. If you want these "old" tiles in the original finish you had better scoop them up now! I will have them in a special section on the wall at the store for you.

These are the tiles that will be in the bisque finish ...you can see some of the "old" tiles in their new finish. The new finish can be worked into your existing collection....the new blocks should be in the store in four to six weeks. There is also the Limited Edition ...Ancient Thorn which will also be arriving for Christmas 2010.

What can I say? Lanterns and old books....definitely here to stay for a while....

These pictures were taken at one of my favorite vendors at the show.

The "industrial" look is so much fun! I think a small amount infused into a home brings back wonderful nostalgic memories....just wish we would have been the ones to hold onto all of this stuff before it became so popular! You can't believe what the originals are selling for! By the way, great (and comfy) bar stools that won't break the bank are available ...just let me know.

Everything in this space is so "thinking outside the box".....you probably can't see them, but the checker pieces are really oreos...winner eats all!

Another showroom carries Lee furniture. This sofa was covered in three different fabrics all in neutrals...then topped off with nail head trim...we can do this for you! Anyway...time to head back to Erie this afternoon...There will be lots to see in the coming weeks at the shop, so make sure you keep in touch. I miss the shops in Paris!! Wonderful flower shops around every corner..

Rows and rows of fresh bouquets..

This flower shop was amazing inside and out...

There were again lots of flowers to choose from in the outdoor flea market. I could hardly resist...

An amazing assortment of fresh fruits and vegetables...

Romantic elements abound..

When I showed this picture to my grandson, Zack, he said..."Grandma, look, they sell the same plaques that you do"...Sid Dickens..alive and well even in Paris!

We got lost the first night out on the town...but I didn't mind. Lots of window shopping is available at midnight in Paris..

It was fun to see what styles and trends were showing in Paris...

I really didn't see the "Country French" look that we have associated with France here in the states for so long....much softer and less color than usually expected.

This particular store was a whole block long!

Time to take a break and enjoy some chocolate...

Or, how about some freshly baked croissants?

The choices were unbelievable! There was a bakery, or two, on every block...This particular one was right around the corner from our hotel....needless to say, it was our first stop every morning!

Then we hit the Paris Flea Market....this is a permanent market that is open three days a week.

Tiny alleyways just jammed with wonderful little booths...

The "industrial look" was big here...

What a cool sculpture....

We always took the time to stop at one of the sidewalk cafes...after such a hard days work! I find that it is so much fun to look back at all of our pictures and think...I was actually there!

New Additions to Traditions.....

At Traditions we are all about new and old "traditions" including five of my eight grandchildren...the newest one being little Weston...only 13 months old!

I haven't had a chance to catch up with you on the new merchandise at Traditins for a while...great new lamps with fun shades...

And for all of you cat lovers out there....how adorable is this lamp?

Fresh apple green and blue is a great combination....for summer or anytime...

We just got in these linen covered dining chairs and great table....

New artwork and "weathered" side tables that work equally as well in the living room or bedroom....

More new pottery in yummy colors..

And a final pic of my granddaughters, McKenna and Isabella...they helped me out in the shop last week.....

Wallpaper...Making a Comeback?

I have seen some really creative uses for wallpaper lately......you know, wallpaper is not just for that little powder room anymore...Why not pick up a roll and frame it out for some added interest behind that "too small" piece of artwork that you love so much?

This small overall print (and I can't believe I am saying this...and matching draperies) adds great charm and warmth to this bedroom.

Or try an interesting mural on one wall only...this room would be pretty boring without it!

An amazing idea for a headboard......

I love maps...so this wallpaper definitely has my approval. This child's room will easily "grow" with the child!

I still love toile....and this colorful pattern takes it to the next level...I also adore the monogrammed pillows....so personal.

Art panels were cut from sections of a funky and bright wallpaper.....

Easy Summer Flower Arrangements...

I don't know about you...but I have the hardest time cutting my garden flowers to make them into little centerpieces and bouquets!! But I have come to realize that no one sees these glorious blooms when they are located on the side of the house or tucked behind a taller plant or tree...so I have given myself permission to cut!

Even weeds look wonderful in these small arrangements...

Single blooms look wonderful...

Your vases and containers need not be "fancy" or extravagant...

We have some great "faux" moss that could fill in for the real stuff....

Again...keep it simple..

This arrangement inspired the wedding decorations that I am making for my niece, Erin, who is to be married next Saturday...stay tuned for the details. But in the meantime...give yourself permission to bring those lovely gifts from nature into your home....Take care, Sue

The Garden Conservancy's Tour Gardens....

Last Sunday my Mom and I wandered around four of the wonderful gardens that were part of the Open Days tour of gardens sponsored by the Garden Conservancy. Unfortunately I didn't wise up and carry my camera until our last stop at the gardens of Sue and Geoff McCreary in North East...

Eleven years ago, the two of them started a "garden transformation" that took a lot of hard work and some pretty amazing creativity.

They built fences and arbors and trellises...

You can tell it has truly been a labor of love..

I adore this little potting shed....

Can you stand how cute this is? They planted the gutters on this shed with trailing vines and flowers!

The entire side of the house is one large planting. Lots of the spring flowers were already over bloomed and the summer flowers were just starting to bud but the garden still looked wonderful. The spring flowers were really early this year...Mother Nature has here own calendar! I think that creating an interesting garden is a lot like creating an interesting room. Little surprises like funky pots, glass garden ornaments, broken pottery, sculptural metal arbors. and lots of plants that are textural and green...but all different shades of green...

I have a small garden area of my own. The day before we went on this tour I had just "finished" the last plantings in my garden...so I thought. Of course my mother and I had to stop at a greenhouse on the way home...just for a couple of things...and so it continues. Just like decorating your house...it is a continual trial and error...adding and subtracting...just when you think you are finished some new idea pops into your head or you are inspired by something you see.....Thank you Geoff and Sue for inspiring me... And thanks to all of the gardeners who graciously opened their gardens to all of us. Your hard work is really appreciated. We arrived home late Monday night...and back to work! Yesterday morning we received a long awaited delivery from "one of a kind" vendors in Highpoint. Keith and Joe helped unload our treasures...

Form London on to Wales...

We visited Kew Gardens.....because I wasn't able to get tickets to the Chelsea Garden Show like I had hoped. But we came away with much inspiration....

We weren't able to get through all of the property...it is so vast...and so beautiful..

My husband, Keith, is getting a little worried about when we arrive home I will be digging up every available space to garden...

These lily pads were at least six feet across!

The next stop was the Tower of London....constant upkeep of all of the grounds surrounding these wonderful historic buildings, not to mention the buildings themselves, is mind bloggling!

Then a quick ride on the tube back to Covent Gardens where we meet up with a friend from Canada who happened to be in London just for the day.....so we had a few in a pub...and some chicken pot pie...

The next day we took a train to Wales...actually to Chester, England, and from there another friend picked us up and drove us to their charming home in Wales. No...they didn't forget to put an "i" in TWLL...the Welch don't seem to use many vowels.

I will share some more pictures later of their amazing home (over 200 years old) and the great surrounding gardens. We had such a wonderful time ....great memories..

Thank you Susan and Peter for sharing your home and friends with us!....but right now we have got to get to the airport for the long flight home...I'll catch up with details later...Take care, Sue

The Right Place At the Right Time......

Keith and I decided to start the day off with a visit to Beg Ben...actually, Big Ben is not the clock, but the largest bell in the chime, a 14 ton bell named after the first commissioner of work, Sir Bejamin Bell. Big Ben is a part of the house of Parliament...the ultimate symbol of London.

We noticed a crowd stating to gather..so we thought we would see what was going on...of course this is not the correct picture of the crowd gathering...bear with me...

The chimes in all the surrounding churches and along with Big Ben striking 11...and the marching band playing....I just had to ask someone in the crowd what was going on....He ( a nice man from Illinois) told me that the Queen was coming to open up the first session of Parliament...something she does only once a year!

So I held my camera above the crowd...and I must say, I got some pretty good pics!!

There she is...the Queen herself sitting in the back....This was so much fun!

But I still enjoy the "real" people that we have meet on this trip....Like this great young couple that we sat with on the Eurostar going from Paris to London...they live in the Engish countryside.

Or this fun lady that we sat next to at lunch today. By the end of lunch we had exchanged emails and she had invited us to come visit with her and her family if we ever were back this way...Love it...almost better than the sights themselves! OK...I am tired..got to rest. Take care, Sue
